160 Studentships Scholarships Exhibitions Bursaries and Prizes the payment of certain examination fees The holders are required to work for higher degree not necessarily of the University of London though the Stu- dentships must be held in the College and to give Umited amount of tutorial or demonstration assistance in their departments Tutorial Studentships are similarly offered from time to time in the Faculty of Music and in certain departments of the Faculty of Arts However additional conditions are attached to that in French and to one of those in German in that the holders are required to be present in the relative departmental library during its hours of opening in term time See also page 271 Medals and Prizes JELF MEDALS AND JELF PRIZE The Endowment was established in 1868 by his friends and colleagues to commemorate the services rendered to the College by the Rev Richard Jelf who retired in that year from the office of Principal which he had held since 1844 Medals are awarded one in each of the Faculties of Arts Laws Natural Science Medical Science Engineering and Music to the students who shall in the view of the Principal have most distinguished themselves during their undergraduate course in the College provided that in the case of the Faculty of Medical Science the student shall have been in attendance for at least five terms and in the case of all other Faculties for at least nine terms In making the awards regard will be had not only to the students' academic proficiency but also to the prominence in the social and athletic activities of the College In the Faculty of Theology Jelf Prize is awarded to the student who having been at least three years in the College shall in the opinion of the Dean of King's College have most distinguished himself in the Faculty The Prize con- sists of books to the value of Ā£3 OTHER MEDALS AND PRIZES For other medals and prizes open to all regular students of the College see entries under the various faculties as follows Faculty of Theology section pages 164 to 166 Faculty of Arts section pages 175 to 176 Faculty of Natural Science section page 187 to 188
