Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxxix Malaya and paid visits to various technical and industrial training establishments and engineering works In June Professor Kastner lectured at Hastings Grammar School on 'Engineering as career' and discussed the recruitment of young engineers with senior members of the teaching staff at the school Professor Greig spent term in Canada at the invitation of the Nuffield Foundation and the Canadian National Research Council visiting group of universities During the Michaelmas term he visited eleven Canadian universities spending month in the Uni- versity of Saskatchewan and about week in each of five other uni- versities-McGill McMaster Winnipeg Edmonton and British Columbia He took the opportunity of visiting the laboratories of the Canadian National Research Council in Ottawa and the laboratories and works of several industrial organisations At the conclusion of the tour he attended the Western Annual General Meeting of the American Physical Society in San Francisco and presented paper This enabled him in addition to visit the University of California Berkeley and Stanford University At the invitation of Associated Electrical Industries Dr Ε Freeman was on secondment to that company at Rugby throughout the year obtaining experience of industrial practice and knowledge of current problems in the design of rotating electrical machines Dr Hussey delivered paper on The application of linear difference equations to uniform single-bay buildings under wind load' at the University College of Swansea Applied Mechanics colloquium in October 1964 Mr Lark Senior Lecturer in Physical Chemistry in the Uni- sity of New South Wales spent the year on study leave with Professor Rose working on the statistical problems involved in the measurement of the fineness of powders The department of Civil Engineering made an important contribu- tion to an international conference on the Structure of Concrete held in London from September 28th to 30th 1965 Members of the depart- ment contributed the following papers 'Short- and long-term de- formations of concrete as influenced by its physical structure and state' Professor Ross Dr Ulston and Dr England jointly 'The delayed elastic deformation of concrete as composite material' Dr Alston 'Some effects of thermal volume changes on the properties and behaviour of concrete' Mr Dougill Dr Brown of the University of California former student of the Faculty also
