lxxxii Annual Report of the Delegacy Dr Shirley Hawkins lectured on 'Genetics at the molecular level' at symposium on 'Modern aspects of cell biology' held at Coventry Technical College Dr Pye gave invited lectures to the Physics Society University College of Wales Aberystwyth the Mammal Society of the British Isles Symposium on 'Sound and mammalian orientation' the Bio- logical Society of Westfield College London the Biological Society of Queen's University Belfast the South-West branch of the Institute of Physics at Gloucester and at the Scuola Normale Superiore Uni- versity of Pisa He also participated in the week-end symposium on 'Communication' held by the University College Science Society at Cumberland Lodge Windsor Great Park The scope of the research carried out in the department has been augmented by developments in ultrasonic bioacoustics and substantial progress continues to be made in the fields of cell biology ecophysio- logy invertebrate physiology marine biology parasitology proto- zoology and vertebrate palaeontology For the prosecution of these lines of enquiry considerable financial aid from outside sources has become available as indicated in the section of this report on Grants for Research In addition Mr Darwin received financial aid from the Wellcome Trustees to carry out research in Africa during the summer vacation During the Easter vacation highly successful teachers' refresher course was held in the department attended by twenty-five school teachers The theme was 'Zoology looking beyond the syllabus' Lectures and practicals were conducted by Professor Arthur Drs Cox Shirley Hawkins Eltringham Pye and Webster and Messrs Darwin and Μ Macdonald-Ross Demonstrations were presented by the Chief Technician and his staff FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY Number of Students 257 48 19 Total 324
