lxxvi Annual Report of the Delegacy Ph Sleeman 'Electronic structure of some ions and radicals Ph Wardell 'Studies with Lewis acids Departmental Notes Work carried out in the research laboratories has been actively and successfully continued on most of the investigations which have been established in the department over recent years These include elec- tronic spectroscopy kinetic isotope effects acid-base catalysis Lewis acid phenomena structure formation and reactions of molecular com- plexes surface chemistry mass spectrometry the electronic structure of molecules radicals and ions molecular orbital calculations crystal- lography free radical reactions in solution heterocyclic chemistry and reactions with carbenes and nitrenes In addition new lines of work have been developed in amino-acid chemistry and on charge transfer complexes Increasing use is being made of computer techniques Detailed plans have been made for enlarged accommodation for the department in the proposed new building on the Strand frontage Consideration has also been given to major revision of undergraduate courses Professor Hey gave the Presidential Address entitled 'The changing face of organic chemistry' to Section Î’ Chemistry at the annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science held at Cambridge He addressed the Association for Science Education Scottish Branch and contributed paper to discussion on Free Radical Reactions held at the Chemical Society Professor Gold gave lectures at Queen's University Belfast University of Durham Manchester College of Science and Technology Bedford College Cornell University University of Pittsburgh McMaster University the Chemical Society of Zurich the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and the State University of New York He also organised and contributed to the Faraday Society Discussion on Proton Transfer Processes Dr Rees gave lectures at the Chemical Society's autumn meeting in Nottingham and at the universities of Birmingham Bristol Cambridge East Anglia and Sussex and at Queen Mary College University College Cardiff Salford College of Technology and Hatfield College of Technology Dr Robertson was re-elected Secretary of the Board of
