lxxiv Annual Report of the Delegacy Professor Sutcliffe who took up his appointment as Professor of Botany at the University of Sussex in April gave course of inter- collegiate lectures on 'Ion uptake by plants' and presented invited lectures to the Fertdiser Society of London and to the Sussex Biological Association His Presidential Address to the Croydon Natural History and Scientific Society was on 'The future of Biology' Dr Gahan presented an invited paper to the Society for Research on Aging and lectured at Bedford College Dr Jessie Keys lectured to groups of biologists at Ilford County High School and the Croydon Natural History Society Dr Cowan participated in course on Human genetics and inheritance' at University College In Aprd Dr Hall visited laboratories in Sweden and Denmark under the auspices of the British Council and lectured to groups of biologists in these countries He also lectured on his research at Queen's University Belfast Research in the department continued into the mechanism of the hormonal control of flowering and vegetative growth in succulent plants by Dr Keys as well as on the uptake of ions by plant tissues and fungi Work on the histochemical localisation of enzymes and other cell constituents continued under the direction of Dr Gahan research award from the DSIR was made during the year to support his study recording oxygen electrode purchased with grant from the Central Research Fund aided the commencement of studies on plant mitochondria under the guidance of Dr Palmer Additional teaching facilities in No 66 Half Moon Lane which came into operation at the start of the session proved most beneficial By the end of the session improved facilities for biochemical work had also been made available in No 66 and are now coming into use Field work continued to form an important part of undergraduate teaching In addition to day excursions courses of week's duration were held at Juniper Hall and Malham Tarn Field Study Centres in June and July and at Aberystwyth in April These courses were under the continuing leadership of Mr Streeter During the year the department received succession of visitors who remained for varying periods studying experimental techniques in histochemistry They included Dr Greco Italy Dr Papa- dopolous Greece Kalina Israel and Miss Nichols Bedford College
