Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxi Ph McMullcn 'An investigation of the structure of ribo- nucleic acids by absorption spectrophotometry Ph Tooze 'Studies of amphibian erythrocytes and erythro- poetic tissues Sc Birmingham Isenberg 'Biochemistry of Bacteriophage Departmental Notes The number of postgraduate students working for higher degrees was twenty The postgraduate course was attended by thirteen internal research students and twenty visitors Fourteen third-year Physics students opted to take the course on the nature and structure of large molecules There is no first degree in Biophysics but members of the staff played an increasing part in the teaching programme of the School of Bio- logical Sciences giving courses of lectures to undergraduate students as follows 3rd-year Special Physiology 3rd-year Special Zoology 2nd and ist- and 2nd-year Zoology Seminars and practical courses were provided for 3rd-year special students Dr Gosling of the Physics department University of the West Indies spent period of study leave in the department carrying out preliminary investigations of problems of flow in relation to atheroma and arterio-sclerosis Dr Rabinowitz University of Washington and Dr Venable Yale University are spending year in the department and shorter visits have been made by Dr Zade and Dr Marsden University of Uppsala and Dr Mavromattis University of Gottingen In August 1964 Sir John Randall attended the tenth international Botanical Congress in Edinburgh This congress was also attended by Dr Warr and Miss McVittie Sir John organised the British Biophysical Society symposium on Morphogenesis and Differentiation in relation to Cellular Fine Structure held at Imperial College in January 1965 and gave paper in the second session entitled 'Problems of morphogenesis in cilia and flagella' He was invited to give paper at the Gordon Conference on Cell Structure and Metabolism held at Meriden New Hampshire in June In August Sir John acted as chair- man of the session on Locomotion at the second international conference on Protozoology at Imperial College In June Professor Μ Wilkins attended the Ciba Foundation
