1 Annual Report of the Delegacy at the National Association of School Magazines Conference on Education Automation and Creativity He introduced two American poets at readings in London and organised the poetry read- ings at the Institute of Contemporary Arts He gave four talks for the BBC on Saul Bellow James Agee the Avant-garde and 'confessional verse' Mr Waldron gave four intercollegiate lectures in the Michael- mas term on 'Lexical meaning and change of meaning' He lectured on the same subject to the seminar for External students at the Univer- sity of North Staffordshire in August The end of the session was saddened by the departure of several members of the departmental staff Professor Garmonsway retired after thirty-five years of devoted service to the College during which he built up strong Medieval side and did much to foster the study of Old Icelandic and Anglo-Saxon Archaeology in the Uni- versity and the editing of Old English and Middle English texts His wise counsel and sympathy will be missed by students and colleagues alike Dr Armstrong left after being here seventeen years to become Professor in the University of Hull It would be difficult to overestimate his valuable services on the modern side of the depart- ment for he taught so many varied courses organised work in 'Practical Criticism' and helped to establish American Literature and Modern Drama for both undergraduate and postgraduate study Student life in the College also owed much to him and if the new College buildings contain as is hoped good stage for plays it will be largely due to his untiring zeal Mr Pearsall also left for the University of York after vastly stimulating interest in the later medieval period during his six years with us DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH Number of Students General and Subsidiary Honours Postgraduate 91 90 10 Total 191 In addition 28 students were spending the year in France as Assistants
