xlvi Annual Report of the Delegacy United States Army Physics department renewal of grant of Ā£2 500 towards Professor Price's research STUDENT ACTIVITIES Report from the Union Society The Union Society has continued to promote the activities of its constituent clubs and societies with some notable successes The Association Football Club and the Women's Swimming Club won their Championships The Music Society produced Verdi's Four Sacred Pieces and Handel's Dixit Dominus for Commemoration and distinguished themselves in their production of Iolanthe in the Lent term The Drama Society won the one-act play festival with Genet's Deathwatch performance which they were invited to repeat several times Next year it hopes to increase its productions to include charity performance at the Lion Club Outside College the Society could not match the excellent results of the previous year In both the University Challenge Contest and the Observer Mace Debating Competition our competitors were eliminated in the second round On the other hand the Society's newspaper King's News was voted among the top ten University papers in the country and at the Council our delegates made marked impression on the proceedings Within the Union Society itself the Constitution was streamlined under the 'Turquet-Smallman' plan to facilitate business which in- eluded the abolition of anachronistic sub-committees and the redistribu- tion of work among the General Representatives Perhaps it was in the social activities of the Society that the most definite mark was made The Coming Up Ball with the 'Barron Knights' group was great success and the Claridges Ball together with the 'Venus and Adonis' Competition under the auspices of Mr Frankie Howerd made Commemoration Week one of the most enjoyable of recent years Unfortunately the perennial enemy from nearby Gower Street once again proved their physical superiority at the Commemoration Games Mitcham Day for once was not ruined by the weather so that the Principal's XI were allowed to claim an honourable draw with the President's XI It seemed that there were more tennis players than athletes wandering around the ground Finally the Principal's Cup was awarded to the Faculty of Science and it is hoped that other faculties will not be discouraged by this result
