xliv Annual Report of the Delegacy College Hall there was deficit of £3 600 compared with £2 500 last year and at Halliday Hall deficit of £900 compared with surplus of £110 last year At King's College Hall the demolition of Danehurst last year and the building of the new Hall in preparation for 1966 accounts for most of the loss incurred During the year 1964-65 capital grants totalling £872 913 were made available to the College by the University Grants Committee through the Court of the University Of this £729 515 was for the acquisition of properties in connection with the College rebuilding schemes £107 628 for constructional work and £35 770 for furniture and equipment BENEFACTIONS AND GRANTS FOR RESEARCH In addition to grants mentioned in departmental sections of this report the Delegacy of the College gratefully acknowledge benefactions and grants in aid of research as indicated from the following sources Agricultural Research Council Biochemistry department grant not exceeding £1 231 in aid of research on the role of'non-protein' amino acids in leguminous plants and their fate when ingested by higher animals Zoology department £5 160 for Packard Series 3000 'tri- carb' automatic dual channel liquid scintillation spectrometer Model 3214 with external standardisation facility Atomic Energy Research Establishment Electrical Engineering depart- ment £2 950 towards research by Dr Burtt Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Botany department not more than £4 545 towards Dr Gahan's investigation of the develop- mcnt of enzyme histochemistry of plant tissues Electrical Engineering department £2 030 for research by Dr Burtt Geology department £3 816 for research by Dr Richardson and not more than £1 321 towards Dr Hancock's investigation entitled 'The Cenomanian Zone of Mantelliceras martimpreyi' Physics department not more than £1 600 towards Professor Price's spectroscopic studies of the intrinsic and impurity properties of crystals in the range 80 -20 Κ Powder Science department not more than £5 150 towards Professor Rose's research on physical and chemical changes which occur during the milling of solid materials not more than £3 450 for research on the dispersion of fine powders in viscous liquids and £3 975 towards Professor Rose's research into problems of electrostatic precipitation
