xlii Annual Report of the Delegacy to husband its resources in order to avoid the need for retrenchment in 1966-67 The Library Grants and Accessions sub-committee has nevertheless found it possible to authorise the placing of subscriptions for sixty-two new periodicals and of standing orders for eighteen new series and fourteen major works in progress special allocation was made from the Library grant to enable its resources to be improved in the field of modern linguistics and special grant of Ā£2 000 was received to build up the Music library The most important single purchase of the year was that of Mrs Richardson's Italian library anticipated in last year's report it contained some 470 volumes made up of 250 volumes on Dante and his contemporaries and 220 volumes on the literature of the Renaissance and Reformation At the same time four large classical sets rendered surplus to requirements by the accession of Professor Enk's library were sold to the libraries of new univer- sities The Library Committee has recorded its view that urgent attention should be given to the introduction of new mechanical methods in the library though it is difficult to see where the necessary equipment can be installed until the new Library is ready Certainly there is room for rationalisation in the production of catalogue entries and the Librarian has been examining the possibility of introducing some form of auto- mation in this field in the meantime temporary entries for newly received books are being placed in the main author catalogue to obviate the inconvenience caused by the delays at present inevitable in the preparation of definitive entries microtext reader intended for use with microcards microprint and microfiches has been installed The Library has again received with gratitude many generous gifts from large number of donors listed in Appendix III In all 005 volumes and 177 pamphlets or parts of periodicals have been added from these sources Special reference should be made to the generosity of the Goldsmiths' Librarian of the University in contributing 137 volumes of duplicates to the Music library and to Dr Franz Ranter's gift of further twenty volumes for addition to the Kantorowicz collection The Centre for Military Archives has also benefited from the generosity of number of donors who are listed in the final section of Appendix III but the Centre's most important accession is not listed there as it has been received on indefinite loan this is the collection of papers assembled by Field Marshal Sir William Robertson and deposited
