xl Annual Report of the Delegacy could have been persuaded by the to give up Somerset House next door at first in part and later in its entirety for academic use It is much to be regretted that for variety of reasons our pleas fell upon deaf ears The college was told that it would receive no govern- ment aid to extend beyond the previously agreed 'quadrilateral' and thus many fine and worthwhile projects of extending its activities and thereby making greater contibution to meet urgent national needs had to be set aside at any rate for the time being The repeated financial crises which with recurring fatality have bedevilled the national economy have had grievous effect upon many undertakings among them the rebuilding of King's College to which we have looked forward for so long The college was within week of signing the contract for the demolition of the buildings on the Strand frontage and the erection of the new Strand block the first stage of the rebuilding of the college along the periphery of the 'quadrilateral' when the Government declared moratorium on expenditure on public building for six months This has been heavy blow and great disappointment for our long cherished hopes but as the ban is of nationwide application we must bear the disappointment as thousands of others are having to do and hope that better times will not be long deferred when we can once more carry on our work as we would wish to do COMPUTING FACILITIES During the year the computing facilities of the College were greatly improved by the installation of Data Link by means of which computational instructions may be sent directly from the College to the Atlas Computer located in Gordon Square and computed results received directly at King's College There are some limitations on the use of the link and it is still necessary to send proportion of data tapes to Gordon Square by van and to receive proportion of results by this route but the installation of the Data Link has resulted in an appreciable reduction of the average time taken to obtain results from Atlas The teleprinter facilities have been increased by the installation of Flexowriter for seven-hole tape in addition to the Creed teleprinter for five-hole tape further Flexowriter has been ordered which when received should reduce the overloading of our present equipment The computational work of the College is growing rapidly and further increase in College facilities will be necessary in the near future
