Annual Report of the Delegacy xxxix been established with greater variety of subjects for undergraduate study This will throw heavier burden upon the theological staff of the College which now comprises by far the greater part of the Theological faculty of the University In keeping with the general lines of change envisaged in other faculties the faculty of Music had also set about the task of revising the structure of the Mus degree As it completed its task quickly all its undergraduates are now taught under the new regulations Changes have been made also in the regulations for research degrees and these came into effect in September 1965 Master's degrees in Arts Science Engineering Laws Theology and Music are now awarded as result of only one year's postgraduate study and by examination An entirely new degree the Phil which will be awarded in all faculties and awarded after two years' research study has replaced the old two-year Master's degrees which were obtained partly by examination and partly by research This new degree will be an intermediate step as it were between the old Master's degrees and the Ph which is awarded for training in research and research methods This new research degree structure has come into being largely because of the recommendation of the Report of the Committee on Higher Education and the need to encourage research in all fields of academic study The first full-time Professor of Music in the University entered upon his duties at King's College at the beginning of the year with scantily equipped department in temporary accommodation and meagre part-time staff In spite of these unpromising circumstances however he had boldly accepted number of students and the work began It has prospered splendidly The department moves into the Music Budding in Surrey Street in October 1965 having appointed three full-time teachers and acquired further equipment and with many more students It can be confidently expected that Professor Dart and his colleagues present and future will do great things for music in the college the university and the community at large The visitation of the University Grants Committee in the summer term was eagerly looked forward to as an excellent opportunity to inform the national authorities of what the college could do to provide more graduate teachers more dentists more engineers more mathe- maticians and scientists if it were given the material means to do so and in particular more accommodation The latter could have been conveniently speedily and economically achieved if the Government
