xiv Annual Report of the Council GENERAL During the year the University continued to discuss its future The federal relationship of the constituent colleges has been reaffirmed and larger measure of autonomy has been granted to colleges both in respect of the content of degree courses and methods of examination The Board of Studies in Theology has continued to seek develop- ment of its present two-course structure of and Honours towards single-course structure for Honours degree offering greater variety in choice of subjects and method of qualifying in the first year which allows for the very differing educational attainments of students wishing to read theology The new higher degree structure has reached final shape one-year course for an Th leading to three papers with an essay two-year course for an Phil in the form of dissertation and two papers the present Th and two- three-year course for Ph in the form of thesis as previously At its meeting in July 1965 the Council decided to move to the appointment of the first Frederick Denison Maurice Professor of Moral and Social Theology in time for October 1966 This very encouraging decision has been made possible by the generosity of considerable number of donors convinced of the urgent need for theological re- search into the future of human persons in the emerging new society Ā£30 000 is still needed to complete the endowment but the Council wishes to establish the professorship on the basis of the money already received and its own resources replenished by the gratifying increase in the annual grant made to the Council by the Church Commis- sioners
