128 Faculties and Courses of Study COURSES FOR MUS DEGREE The course for the Mus degree extends over three years The Pre- liminary examination is taken at the beginning of the third term and the Final examination towards the end of the third year PRELIMINARY MUS COURSE This is two-term course preparing students for the Preliminary examination which takes place at the beginning of the third term The subjects of the course are History of Music Aural Training Repertory and Style Melody Harmony and Counterpoint FINAL MUS COURSE candidate for admission to the Final examination for the degree of Mus must have passed the Preliminary examination at least three terms but not more than two years previously and must have matri- culated at least nine terms previously The subjects for the Final examination are as follows History of Instruments and their Use Twentieth-century Music Two Special Periods of European Music with set works Two Optional Subjects to be selected by the candidate and viva voce examination which may include practical test The Faculty considers it important that undergraduates should acquire wide experience and knowledge of music and that they should extend their powers of original independent and sustained thought through their musical studies Instruction will be by means of lectures tu- torials discussion groups seminars and workshop periods Students will be required also to take subsidiary course in subject of their own choosing from the list given in the Faculty prospectus The examina- tion in the subsidiary subject will normally take place at the end of the first Final year Possible subsidiary subjects are listed in the separate Faculty prospectus SUBSIDIARY MUSIC COURSE This two-year course with an examination at the end of the second year is open to members of other faculties who are required to take short subsidiary course The examinations wdl assess candidate's general knowledge of music rather than detaded consideration of any particular aspect of it The Faculty of Music regrets that because of the shortage of staff and accommodation it cannot consider applicants for this course until October 1967
