xliv Annual Report of the Delegacy 'Definitions of satire' during the English Society weekend at Cumber- land Lodge and gave four lectures for the Extra-Mural course on The literature of protest' at Wansfell College In January he lectured in the University of Liege on 'Three contemporary British playwrights' and lectured to the British Universities North America Club at the London School of Economics He attended the British Association for American Studies conference at Keele University in April and took part in public discussion on 'Contemporary British writing' at Goldsmiths' College During the summer he gave talks at Hockerill Training College and Jordanhill College of Education and attended the Oxford Seminar on American Studies where he took part in seminars and lectured on 'American contemporary fiction Mr Mottram gave two talks on the BBC Third Programme 'William Burroughs the algebra of need' and 'The letters of Scott Fitzgerald During the session Mr Pearsall was Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Victoria University Toronto He attended the annual conference of the Modern Language Association of America in Chicago in December and of the Medieval Academy of America in Princeton in April He gave the Chaucer course in the University of British Columbia Summer School at Vancouver DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH Number of Students General and Subsidiary 87 Honours 68 Postgraduate 10 Occasional Total 166 In addition 29 students were spending the year in France as Assistants First Degrees Honours 1st Class 2nd Class Upper Division 2nd Class Lower Division 3rd Class
