Annual Report of the Delegacy xii Higher Degree Ph Busuttil 'Cicero de Legibus Book an introduction translation and commentary Professor Maguinness gave Presidential Address 'Friends and the philosophy of friendship in Horace to the University of Birming- ham Classical Circle He lectured to the North London Inter-Schools Classical Club on 'Richard Bentley the greatest English classical scholar and to the Manchester branch of the Classical Association on 'Horace the eclectic' He was invited to visit Poland by the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and the British Council there he lec- tured in the Universities of Warsaw and Cracow on Horace l'Eclec- tique' and gave broadcast in the English section of Radio Warszawa Professor Winnington-Ingram lectured to the Archaeological Society of St Andrews on 'Music in Greek life to the Exeter branch of the Classical Association on 'Ancient Greek music to the Hellenic Travellers' Club on 'Revenge justice and tragedy' and to the sixth congress of the Fondation Europeenne de la Culture at Athens on 'Greek and modern tragedy Professor Η Scullard lectured to the Midlands Classical Society at Wolverhampton and to the University of Birmingham Classical Circle Dr Hainsworth spent the session as Visiting Professor in the Department of Classics of the College of Liberal Arts University of Minnesota where he stayed on to give courses in the summer school He also gave special series of six public lectures on' Questions in Homeric scholarship' and read various papers to college societies both in the University of Minnesota and in Macalester College Saint Paul In Dr Hainsworth's absence Mr McM Caven of Birkbeck College acted as visiting lecturer in the department The King's College Classical Society gave several well-attended per- formances of the Trachiniae of Sophocles in Greek Departmental Notes DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Number of Students General and Subsidiary Honours Postgraduate 32 94 37 Total 163
