Annual Report of the Delegacy xxxvii Medical Research Council for its Biophysics Research Unit and the resulting collection is administered as branch of the College Library The Centre for Military Archives referred to in last year's report was formally inaugurated in May and has already received important collections of papers from the donors listed in the final section of Appendix III number of other collections have been promised The Trustees are particularly endebted to the Leverhulme Trust fund for grant of £5 000 spread over three years to cover the cost of micro- fdming equipment and the salary of an archivist who has already started working on the papers received so far FINANCE The total of Grants received from the Court of the University amounted to £ 18 200 compared with £986 400 last year Fee income was £149 800 as against £149 900 last year As in previous years Government Departments various Foundations and private firms con- tinued their support of research projects at the College and contributed in all £68 400 In addition the Medical Research Council contributed £10 000 to the upkeep of the Department of Biophysics Drury Lane Departmental expenses increased from £812 200 last year to £1 011 800 in the present year This figure includes the cost of salaries and superannuation of the academic library technical and clerical staff of the College as well as expenditure on departmental and labora- tory maintenance and library costs Maintenance of Premises showed an increase from £176 600 to £205 300 There was large increase under Heat Light Water and Power and substantial increases have been awarded to maintenance and porter staff The total expenditure for the year was £1 386 900 and the total income was £1 442 000 showing surplus of £55 100 on the year's working Both the men's hostels were full throughout the session At King's College Hall there was deficit of £2 500 compared with £1 600 last year and at Halliday Hall surplus of £110 compared with £1 320 last year At King's College Hall the demolition of "Danehurst" pre- paratory to the building of the new Hall of Residence accounts for most of the loss incurred During the year 1963-64 capital grants totalling £317 256 were made available to the College by the University Grants Committee through the Court of the University Of this £80 191 was for the
