XXXVI Annual Report of the Delegacy authorise the purchase of three substantial sets of back volumes of serial publications The purchases include that of 164 volumes from the library of the late Professor Wooldridge and at the end of the session negotiations had just been completed for the purchase of an important library in the field of Dante studies and Italian Renaissance literature belonging to Mrs Richardson who as Miss de Castelvecchio was lecturer in Italian at King's in 1916-21 The Library has benefited from the generosity of many donors listed in Appendix III who have given total of 353 volumes and 283 pamphlets during the year bringing the total accessions for the session up to 012 volumes and 949 pamphlets It is always invidious to select particular gifts for special mention but it will not be out of place to refer briefly to the fascinating collection of diaries correspondence and other manuscript and printed relics of the siege of Paris in 1870-71 collected or written by her father who was in the French capital at that time given by Miss Edwina Child to 78 volumes on Austrian history and institutions given by the Austrian Institute in London to 152 volumes of Russian scientific literature from the National Lending Library for Science and Technology and to 190 volumes of historical and ecclesiological works received through the generosity of Mr Begley The introduction of fines has had the desired effect of drastically reducing the number of overdue books while the problem of books still outstanding from previous terms has virtually been eliminated The decision has been taken to introduce new system of classifica- tion based on the needs of the academic departments for the arrange- ment of the books on the shelves of the various subject libraries Such classification had been devised and introduced by the Librarian when at University College and at the request of the departments concerned had already been applied in pilot schemes in the Geography and German libraries at King's The application of the new scheme will take number of years to complete Library facilities have been disrupted during the session by the con- struction work in the southern half of the main building The upper floor of the General Library has had to be evacuated and as result the History Philosophy and General Science libraries are temporarily accommodated in converted premises in the Strand In the meantime new Biophysics library has been established at Drury Lane where the books in this subject from the Physics library have been amalgamated with the books and periodicals provided by the
