Annual Report of the Delegacy xxxv reputation as climatologist which he brings back with him to King's together with burning enthusiasm to build up even higher the reputa- tion of the department so that it shall play its proper part in the work of the joint School of Geography which we share with the London School of Economics To cover adequately the new subjects which are being added to the domain of Geography Professor Hare required additional staff it is pleasure to report that five additional appoint- ments have been made three of them at senior level so that the depart- ment will be able to undertake its full range of work and carry it out well The department of War Studies has made excellent and steady pro- gress under the leadership of Professor Michael Howard and has attracted several senior scholars this session Two years ago the hope was reported that it might be possible under the auspices of the depart- ment of War Studies and the College Library to establish in King's College Centre for Military Archives where distinguished soldiers sailors airmen politicians and scientists might deposit important documents for the use of properly accredited scholars It is pleasure to report that the Centre was inaugurated during the session and that number of valuable collections of documents have been entrusted to the College and others promised An archivist has been appointed to catalogue classify and have charge of the papers under the general supervision of the College Librarian THE LIBRARY An increase in the library grant of Ā£5 000 year for the remainder of the quinquennium now permits the Library Committee to meet to the full the reasonable library needs of the academic departments and to make appropriate non-recurrent allocations to enable new heads of departments to build up their subject libraries in their own special fields of interest As the supplementary grant was not available until well into the session its effect is not reflected to the full in the number of items pur- chased which totalled 659 volumes and 666 pamphlets and parts of periodicals The enhanced financial resources at its disposal have how- ever enabled the Library Grants and Accessions sub-committee to sanction the placing of standing orders for seventy-one new periodicals sixteen new series and ten major works in progress number of them deferred from the previous session owing to lack of funds and to
