8S General Information Interviews can be arranged by appointment both during term and in vaca- tions The fee for registration with the Board is 2s 6d for each six-monthly period Registration forms may be obtained on application to the Secretary University of London Appointments Board 49 Gordon Square WC1 Telephone Euston 7489 The Board also publishes handbook of information Careers for Graduates new edition of this is now in the course of preparation and will be available in the Michaelmas term 1964 The University Library Any member of the University staff or student may apply to use the Univer- sity Library entrance in the Senate House WC1 either from Malet Street or from Russell Square An Internal student may obtain ticket by completing an application form to be obtained at the library and showing his current College admission card Arrangements are made particularly during the first few weeks of the session for new members to be instructed in the use of the Library The Library has about 800 000 books on all subjects many of which may be borrowed for home reading and about 000 current periodicals There are several important special collections including Music Library The reading rooms are open on weekdays during term and the Easter vacation from 30 to On Saturdays and in the Christmas and summer vacations the Library is closed at every evening There is refectory which may be used by registered readers Books may be borrowed from 10 to 30 on weekdays during term and the Easter vacation and from 10 to on Saturdays and during the Christmas and summer vacations Microfilms Xerox and other photographic copies may be obtained from the Library Photographic Department list of charges is available on applica- tion In the Library there are eight microtext readers microfilm microcard microprint University Union On August 1st 1952 the University of London Union established in 1921 and the University of London Athletic Union established 1906 became one body under the title University of London Union The amalgamation was brought about to simplify the organisation of the student body The Union provides for social cultural and athletic activities of University of London students at university level supplementing the facilities provided in the college union societies It fields representative teams in various branches of sport and awards the University of London 'Purple' the Union encourages keen and friendly rivalry between the colleges of the University by arranging an intercollegiate debating competition one-act play festival and the various cup competitions leagues and tournaments in all branches of sport The University Union building in Malet Street is open to members of the Union It contains offices refectory open for luncheon tea and supper an assembly hall and stage swimming pool gymnasium badminton and squash courts lounges and bar library and rooms for television music billiards and table tennis
