General Information 77 Mondays to Fridays and until 12 noon on Saturdays except during the long vacation when the Library remains closed on Saturdays The hours of opening of the outlying subject libraries vary and as rule they are closed to readers in vacation In number of cases access to the outlying libraries is granted to key-holders only but any reader may request books from such libraries to be made available for use in the General Library The Library as whole is closed on public holidays and at such other times as the College buildings are closed Special Collections The Library contains number of important special collections which have been acquired by gift bequest or purchase during the years since its foundation in 1829 The most notable bequest was of the library of Dr William Marsden sometime Secretary of the Navy which contains many rare items in wide variety of languages including among other early Bibles the only known copy of Genesis in the Algonquin language printed at Cambridge Virginia in 1655 The Oriental books from this collection are deposited on loan at the School of Oriental and African Studies Other special collections which have enriched the Library's resources include library of some 000 volumes on electricity and kindred subjects up to the year 1875 bequeathed by Professor Sir Charles Wheatstone the libraries of Dr Furnivall Professor Skeat and Professor Reed now incorporated in the English library collection of works on modem Greek studies left to the College by former Principal Dr Burrows which was supplemented by gift of some 800 volumes from Dr William Miller's library collec- tion of material relating mainly to Goethe and Schiller assembled by Mrs Frida Mond comprehensive collection of works in the German language in the fields of literature history science and Judaica formed by Dr Ludwig Kantorowicz the mathematical library of Mr James the zoological library of the Rev Stebbing collection of books from the library of the Rev Professor Maurice pre- sented by his grandson Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice the library of the Rev Professor Box in Hebrew and Old Testament studies the theological collection of the Rev Professor Η Rclton the Portuguese library of Professor Prestage the historical books of Professor Hearnshaw the books on French literature of Pro- fessor Louis Brandin the classical and patristic collection of Professor
