Annual Report Departmental Notes Under pressure from the Government all Departments of Educa- tion in England and Wales have been endeavouring to expand their services as trainers of graduate teachers Members of this department played substantial part in the founding of the Graduate Teacher Training Registry which is now functioning fully at 155 Gower Street as an inter-departmental centre and clearing-house The King's department in fact overstrained its resources and its teach- ing and library accommodation in accepting 135 graduates for its one- year course at the same time achieving record enrolment The de- partment continued to help in the growing activities of the constituent colleges of the University Institute of Education now in its fourteenth year The retirement is reported in of Mrs Murray who joined the department in 1930 and has contributed substantially to the de- velopment of training in science and mathematics teaching in the University It is expected that the department may be able to profit from her help in part-time capacity It is also regretfully losing the services of Mr Wallis sometime headmaster of Willesden Gram- mar School who has been part-time lecturer and supervisor for fifteen years and of Miss Wilshere formerly lecturer at the Institute of Education who has worked in similar capacity for four years Professor Α Judges paid two visits to Central Africa where he is chairman of the Southern Rhodesia Education Commission which presented its main report to the Governor of the Territory in June 1963 He completed his work as chairman of the Working Party on Research in Technical Education in England the report of which was published in May 1963 As chairman of the Conference of Heads of University Departments of Education he became member of the Minister of Education's committee of inquiry into school examinations and curricula Among engagements fulfilled by members of the department were lectures given by Professor Judges at the Nottingham Easter vacation course on Social Aspects of Education for lecturers and teachers by Mr Bcales at University College Cardiff Vaughan College Leicester and St Mary's College Strawberry Hill by Dr King at Hamburg Amsterdam Warsaw Cracow Oxford Swansea and Syracuse University New York
