Annual Report vii ous illness in 1954 left him in indifferent health and it was grief to him that he had been obliged to restrict his research and teaching in the field He will be remembered as one of the College's most loyal and distinguished alumni memorial service attended by large con- gregation was held in the College chapel on May 22nd Mrs Annie Blackwell sc died on September 29th 1963 at the age of 61 following heart operation After successful career as school teacher specialising in Chemistry she began her career as trainer of teachers at the University of Reading and then joined the Education department at this College in 1936 She was with the College during the wartime evacuation to Bristol and after the return to London was for many years in administrative charge of the one-year course last year she was given the title of Director of Post- graduate Training For many years she was the indefatigable Secre- tary and Treasurer of the Women's Senior Common Room Between 1945 and 1958 she was chairman of the University examiners in educa- tion During the 1950s Mrs Blackwell was editor of periodical survey of theses in education and educational psychology and this together with her friendly association with schools in the London area gave her wide circle of friends and acquaintances who now with the College deeply mourn her loss Miss Nancy Pindcr Clerk to the Faculty of Natural Science died on January 7th 1963 after very short illness Miss Pinder joined the administrative staff of the College nearly forty years ago and gave un- stinting and devoted service as clerk in several departments of the College Since the war increasing numbers and pressure of work forced her to retain only her work in the Faculty of Science where she will long be remembered The deaths of the following were also reported with regret Mr Calvert Special Lecturer in the Structure and Organisation of Industry 1944-54 Lady Galway Fellow of King's College who was member of the Delegacy from 1936 until her retirement in 1961 Miss Hilary Gerrans student in the French department from 1960 to 1963 when she obtained First Class Honours in the Final examina- tion Professor Giffen member of staff in the Faculty of Engineering from 1927 to 1940 from 1945 he was Professor of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Queen Mary College
