56 GENERAL INFORMATION UNION SOCIETY Patron The Principal The elected officers are the President the Vice-President the Secre- tary the Chesham Secretary the Athletics Vice-President the External Affairs Vice-President and the Assistant Secretary The Treasurer and the Assistant Treasurer who are also Union officers are always mem- bers of the academic staff The Senior Woman Student who is also Union officer is elected annually by the Women's Common Room The names of the officers for the current session are given in Appendix Î’ at the end of the Calendar The objects of the Union Society as set out in its constitution are -To promote social intercourse among its members throughout the College the success of students' clubs and societies and the interests of students generally and to provide means of recreation Every present regular student of the College is member and is entitled to membership of all College Clubs and Societies the use of the Chesham and the Athletic Ground and Pavilion and the right to vote at all General Meetings and Elections Membership of the Society is also open to members of the academic staff Permission from the Principal is necessary before forming any society and the rules must be submitted to him for approval The control of the several students' clubs and societies is vested in the Union Society to which all the athletic clubs and many of the societies are affiliated The affairs of the Society are conducted through an Executive Com- mittee on which sit the officers of the Society the Faculty Presidents six general representatives and the Past President Hon Secretary and Senior Woman Student It meets frequently during term Below this committee are five standing committees which co-ordinate reports from the 13 sub-committees responsible to them respectively and which present final report to the Executive The various duties of all the committees and sub-committees are defined in the Constitution and are subject to ultimate control by the Union General Meeting which any member of the Society may attend Such General Meetings are held fortnightly throughout the term Two grades of clubs and societies exist for the benefit of the members "approved" and "affiliated the finances of the latter being entirely administered and directed by the Union Society while those of the former are not in any particular the responsibility of the Union Society The affiliated clubs are -The Association Football Athletic Badminton Boats Boxing Bridge Chess Cricket Cross Country Fencing Hockey Judo Lacrosse Netball Rifle Rugby Foot- ball Sailing Squash Racquets Swimming Tennis and Table Tennis Clubs the Drama society the Literary society the Mountaineering society the Music society the Photographic society the Ballroom Dancing club the Folk Dance club and Youth Hostels Group The several athletic clubs are governed by captains and officers elected by their members The sporting clubs are the responsibility of the Athletics Vice- President who is the chairman of the committee which reports directly to the Executive Committee and deals exclusively with matters affecting the sporting clubs All sports club secretaries sit on the board The finances of all affiliated societies are under the control of the
