iv ANNUAL REPORT Church of England member of the Finance Committee and former student of the College The Council received with regret the news of the retirement of the Registrar of King's College one of the officers who serves both sides of the College and expressed their appreciation of his devoted services to the Theological Department in the following Minute In taking' leave of the Registrar of the College Mr Combridge the Council is saying good-bye to well-known and trusted friend Mr Combridge joined the staff of the Mathematics Department in 1926 and in 1937 became assistant to the Secretary In 1948 he was appointed Registrar Both during the difficult war years at Bristol and later during the equally difficult years of reconstruction his services his know- ledge and his experience have been unreservedly placed at the dis- posal of the Council and the Council has drawn on these heavily As staunch supporter of the Establishment his official stall in chapel has rarely been vacant as keen oarsman his support on the towpath has been equally unflagging whilst as the source of knowledge regarding examination procedure and entrance require- ments his position has been enviable and indeed unique Along with this has gone warmth of human interest and sense of pietas for the College which will remain for all time in the memories of his friends and colleagues His visits to Warminster have been particularly appreciated To him the Council say quite simply but with deep sincerity we are grateful and they wish him and Mrs Combridge many many years of happy and well-earned retirement The retirement of Professor Charles Harold Williams from the Chair of History did not mean that he would cease to be member of the Council and this fact was noted with pleasure as also the appointment of Professor Donald Holroyde Hey another member of the Council as the new Assistant Principal The Dean of St Paul's was created Companion of Honour by Her Majesty the Queen he also celebrated his goldei wedding Both these events gave the Council the opportunity and pleasure of congratulating this most distinguished and well-beloved old student of the College The Staff of the Theological Department elected the Reverend Dr Simon to the Council in place of Miss Edwards whose term of office had expired The Associates elected Prebendary Poulden in place of the Reverend Lloyd Dr Mascall and Dr Jasper were elected to the Theological Committee Fellowship The Right Reverend and Right Honourable Henry Colville Mont- gomery-Campbell former Bishop of London and Deputy Chairman of the Council was elected Fellow of King's College
