ANNUAL REPORT lvii tion of Refrigeration at Washington in August 1962 He also attended the meetings of the International Institute of Refrigeration at Cam- bridge in September 1961 and read paper entitled survey of the newer refrigerants He was awarded the Lightfoot Medal of the Institute of Refrigeration for paper read in February 1962 entitled The calorimetric determination of refrigerating capacity 1' He acted as leader of the British delegation to the meetings of the International Standards Organization in London on the Testing of Refrigerant Compressors Mr Kenn attended the Eighth Conference of the British Hydro- mechanics Research Association at the College of Aeronautics Cran- field in April 1962 and participated in one discussion specifically Dr Zarek in September 1961 attended and read paper in Prague as guest of the Czechoslovak Scientific Technical Association In April 1962 he attended as Chairman meeting in Paris of the Inter- national Standards Organization Working Group Pulsating How Mr Bush Chief Technician in the Department of Mechanical Engineering retired at the end of the session after seventeen years' most valuable service The laboratory facilities of the Department of Electrical Engineering have been extended by the establishment of small Servomechanisms Laboratory in which research and Part III project work will be pursued In the Civil Engineering department special postgraduate course lasting one week was conducted during the Easter vacation by Dr Jenkins and Mr Illston on Matrix Methods and Electronic Computing in Structural Engineering The course was attended by consulting engineers contractors and others interested in this subject It was much appreciated C-PUBLIC LECTURES Michaelmas term 1961 -Public Lectures delivered during this term were as follows Faculty of Arts Jane Austen and The Art of the Novel by Pro- fessor Irene Simon Francisco de Holanda Portuguese humanist and friend of Michaelangelo by Mr Bury Generacion de la dictatura by Senor Jose Hierro Faculties of Arts and Theology Continuity Inaugural lecture by the Reverend Professor Ackroyd Samuel Davidson Professor of Old Testament Studies Faculties of Arts and Natural Science Ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons series of seven lectures in War Studies given by Dr Pirani and Dr Elliott
