ANNUAL REPORT xlvii been made in rotenoid and in acetylene chemistry Reactions of car- benes and N-oxides have been studied Calculations on electronic structures and spectra have been continued and an extensive study of spectra in the caesium bromide region of the infra-red has been initiated This work has already shown that many previous assignments of frequencies in this region are erroneous and compound containing five-coordinate tin has been revealed Valuable financial help has been received from the Government and industry the Royal Society the British Empire Cancer Campaign and the Institute of Petroleum Professor Hey gave two lectures at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the University of Munich He read papers at symposia held at Slough College for Further Education and at Hatfield Technical College on Free Radical Reactions and Heterocyclic Chemistry respec- tively and gave the Distinguished Visitors address before the Chemical Society of Queen Mary College Dr Gold gave lecture at the University of Cambridge and accepted an invitation as Visiting Professor at Cornell University for July 1962 He was Chairman and Lecturer at symposium on Isotope effects in aromatic substitution by hydrogen at the Gordon Conference on the Chemistry and Physics of Isotopes held at New Hampton Dr Crombie gave lecture on Steroids and other natural pro- ducts יי at the Gordon Conference held at New Hampton and at Merck and Pfizer research centres He also delivered lectures at the University of Leeds Woolwich Polytechnic and the Unilever Research Department Port Sunlight Dr Cadogan gave lectures at the University of Leicester University College of Swansea University College Imperial College and Slough College for Further Education Dr Robertson was appointed Acting Secretary of the Board of Studies in Chemistry He gave lecture at Queen Mary College Dr Rees gave lectures at University College Queen Mary College and Birkbeck College Dr Τ Peacock lectured at University College department of physics Number of Students Sc General 120 Ancillary Physics 71 Sc Special 94 Postgraduate 26 Total 311
