FACULTY OF THEOLOGY 225 KING'S COLLEGE HOSTEL Vincent Square Westminster Warden The Reverend Canon Evans The Theological Department of King's College was established in 1846 but provision for the training of students by means of full corporate life was first made in 1902 In that year the Vice-Principal the Reverend George Ernest Newsom was instrumental in founding hostel for theological students in Mecklenburgh Square where during ten years the foundations of this important part of the work of theological college were well laid In 1913 the students were transferred to the present hall of residence in Vincent Square which was built at cost of Ā£28 000 and formally opened in 1914 In 1929 this fine building was completed by the addition of west wing in which chapel and library were included The discipline and devotional training of the students resident in the Hostel is similar to that in theological colleges the general order of the day being as follows 15 Holy Communion Meditation 15 Breakfast 30 Mattins in College 10 to Lectures Meetings etc in College 30 Tea 30 Evensong Dinner 10 Compline at 15 on Wednesdays with address The position of the Hostel affords easy contact with the College it enables residents to keep in touch with the many religious and social enterprises which centre in London and it makes it possible for them to share in the Sunday services at St Paul's and the Abbey and other London churches and to hear some of the best preachers of the day The students are to large extent self-governing community holding periodical meetings in their Common Room and electing their own officers In the four-year course which is required by the Council of King's College and by for all King's College ordinands the third year must be spent in residence at the Hostel and the fourth year at the college at Warminster Although the Hostel is thus in the main third year place of residence there is certain number of rooms available for junior members of the Faculty
