156 FACULTY OF NATURAL SCIENCE As part of the Sc Special Degree course each student must under- take an original investigation of selected botanical topic Experi- mental work will normally be necessary and students are advised to start this during the summer vacation at the end of their second year Apparatus chemicals and other facilities are provided -Field Classes In Ecology During the Michaelmas and Lent terms several day field classes are held on the taxonomy and ecology of the lower plant groups During the Easter term each year pursues course of study in the British vegetation In the first year students receive an introductory course on the taxonomy of the British flora types of British vegetation and in ecological principles Second year students receive instruction in techniques in the analysis of the plant environment and in statistical methods of plant sociology This course is continued in the third year There is week field course in the summer vacation at the end of the first and second years and further week's field course in algal and bryophyte ecology may be arranged during the Easter vacations Attendance at all these field classes is compulsory for Se Special students
