86 PRIZES STEPHEN PRIZE This Prize was founded in 1840 by Sir George Stephen The Prize consists of books to the value of £5 5s The Prize is open to all regular students of the College who have completed one term and not exceeded nine terms The Prize will be awarded annually for an English Essay upon prescribed subject The exercise must be typewritten and distinguished by some motto The candidate should send his exercise to the Secretary before May 31st at the same time sending his name and motto under sealed cover in an envelope bearing the motto Subject for 1963 Ancient Monuments Subject for 1964 An essay entitled either Culture in the Twentieth Century יי or Church and State DREW GOLD MEDAL AND PRIZE FOR MATHEMATICS This Prize was founded in 1872 by William Henry Drew Professor of Mathematics 1869 to 1882 in memory of his eldest son Robert Middlemist Drew Mathematical Scholar Elect of St John's College Oxford who died on Commemoration Day at King's College 1870 before he had completed the 17th year of his age The Prize consists of gold medal of the value of £10 or of silver gilt medal and books of the joint value of £10 The Prize is open to all regular students who have attended at least two years at the College The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who in the opinion of the Principal and the Head of the Department of Mathema- tics shall have most distinguished himself in the subject of Mathematics Β-Prizes open to students in the Faculty of Arts only BREWER PRIZE FOR ENGLISH LITERATURE AND HISTORY This Prize was founded in 1878 by the friends and colleagues of the Rev John Sherren Brewer Professor of English Literature and Modern History from 1865 to 1878 Under the original conditions the Prize was to be awarded for English Literature and Modern History in alternate years but in 1930 the Delegacy added from general College funds sufficient capital to make it possible to award one prize in each subject in each year Each Prize consists of books to the value of £5 The Prizes are open to all regular students of the Faculty of Arts The Prizes will be awarded annually one on the result of the year's
