viii ANNUAL REPORT The Council expressed its gratitude to the Reverend Professor Sparks Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture at Oxford for acting as External Examiner for the Examination for three years The Commemoration Sermon was preached by the Very Reverend Beddoes Provost of Derby Goldsmiths' Company Travel Award was made to Mr William Penney and three members of the Faculty went to America during the Long Vacation as Clayton Volunteers Mr Michael Knibb was awarded the English Fellowship at Union Theological Seminary New York for one year To mark the 350th anniversary of the publication of the Authorised Version of the Bible together with the publication of the New Testament of the New English Bible the Librarian arranged an exhibition of Bibles owned by the College including our unique possession of the Genesis of the Algonquin Bible The series of lectures on The Church's Use of the Bible was concluded by Professor Gordon Rupp Professor Lampe and Professor Nineham It is intended that the series shall be published Lectures to the Faculty on Fridays at 10 during the Michaelmas term were on the theme Personal Relationships in an Age of Affluence and during the Lent term God's Universe Exterior and Interior Old Students Canon Marcus Knight was appointed Dean of Exeter the Reverend Gundry-Professor and Head of the Department of Religious Studies in the University College of Ibadan Nigeria Dr Clifford Chapman-the first and Canon Oldham-the second Canon Residentiary of the new Cathedral at Guildford northern reunion of was held in Manchester at the Whit- Tuesday reunion in the Strand the sermon at the Sung Eucharist was preached by the Right Reverend John Boys formerly Bishop of Kimberley and Kuruman and an old student of St Boniface Missionary College Warminster In the afternoon presentation was made to Professor Tasker who then spoke about his experiences as translator of the New English Bible third reunion was held at Ipswich King's College Hostel The retirement of the Matron Miss Margaret Rope after eight years provided the occasion to note with gratitude the efficient and economical way in which she had run the Hostel as well as the success she had had in securing vacation lettings on which the financial equilibrium of the Hostel so largely depends Income from this source was nearly Ā£3 000 this year the highest in her time as Matron The Council expressed its appreciation to Miss Rope for her services and wished her well for the years ahead Miss Margaret Bond has been appointed in her place
