OF THE COUNCIL long distinguished and devoted service to the Faculty and to the College and wishes him and Mrs Tasker every happiness in their retirement On the retirement of Professor McHardy recorded in the Annual Report 1959-60 the University and College agreed to establish the Samuel Davidson Chair of Old Testament Studies in the Faculty of Arts with the other new chairs in theology The Council received with pleasure the news that the new holder of this Chair would be the Reverend Dr Peter Runham Ackroyd Lecturer in Old Testament at Cambridge Towards the end of the session the University appointed to the newly created Chair in New Testament Studies the Reverend Canon Christo- pher Francis Evans Lightfoot Professor of Divinity in the University of Durham-the appointment to take effect in October 1962 The Council expressed its great satisfaction at this appointment and agreed to the Dean's proposal that successor to Professor Tasker should be sought in the field of Historical Theology The session ended with the news both gratifying and regrettable that Mr Smart would be relinquishing his post as Lecturer in the History and Philosophy of Religion to become the first holder of the second Chair of Theology at Birmingham University The Reverend Jasper received the degree of from Leeds University for his biography of Bishop Headlam and his study of the liturgical correspondence of Bishop Frere The Reverend William Neil Kelly was appointed part-time assistant lecturer in the Department Members of the Faculty of Theology have contributed the following publications and articles during the session The Reverend Allen Review Theology August 1961 The Gospel According to St Mark by Ε Cranfield The Reverend Coleman Experiments in Prayer Press Dr Collinson Letters of Thomas Wood Puritan 1566-1577 Bulletin of the Institute of Historical Research Special Supplement No November 1960 John Field and Elizabethan Puritanism in Elizabethan Government and Society essays presented to Sir John Neale Athlone Press 1961 Reviews Three Treatises Concerning Wales By John Penry with an intro- duction by David Williams in History XLVI February 1961
