xlviii ANNUAL REPORT The preparation of special dissections for examination purposes and for the Museum continues The chief research interest as previously has been the study of the effect of chemical substances on the activity of the reticulo-endothelial system as defence against infection and cancer DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY Number of Students 245 Sc Special Physiology Departmental Notes Professor Harris gave lectures in the department of Genetics and the department of Experimental Medicine Cambridge and in the Post- graduate Medical School London He also delivered papers at the Conference on Human Genetics at the Royal College of Physicians and at the Symposium on Enzymes and Drug Action organized by the British Pharmacological Society An Easter vacation course in Biochemistry under the auspices of the department of Extra-Mural Studies University of London was held in the department The course was organized by Dr Darbre and lectures and practical demonstrations were given by all members of the department Thirty-six people attended mainly science teachers from schools Considerable improvements have taken place in the facilities of the department Room HE has been converted into laboratory and Room 12E into departmental office dark-room and chromato- graphy room have been fitted up Research work has included studies of genetically determined variants of human serum cholinesterase and of other plasma and urinary proteins Other investigations were undertaken into the distribution structure and taxonomic significance of unusual aminoacids in Leguminous seeds into the development of methods for the analysis of mixtures of sugar alcohols in biological fluids into the structure of human keratin and into the development of gas chromatographic techniques for the analysis of substances of biological significance DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY is vjauoi' aia tm ''wotyuK 091ω ϊΑπο ί 9υ 06ϊ Ιο ϊιΊ Τ ιοβροιοί Number of Students 245 Sc Special Physiology Occasional Ph
