ANNUAL REPORT xlv slit scattering yielded interesting results and apparatus to test the con- elusions and optimise collimator design is nearing completion Theore- tical work on the optical model is continuing for separated isotopes Members of the atmospherics research group under the direction of Dr Chapman attended special course of lectures on the applica- tion of the University of London electronic digital computer and are now using this computer for the solution of their research problems With the aid of grant from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Dr Chapman initiated an investigation on the origin and nature of extremely low-frequency radio noise 1-200 new tech- nique was developed using the University computer for measuring the polarization of the radio waves generated by lightning discharges which has provided information on the nature of the errors in locating thunder- storms by the Meteorological Office network An experi- mental determination of the variation with frequency of the phase velocity of radio waves propagated round the earth was completed for the hitherto unexplored frequency range 100 to 10 Kc The theoretical implications of these results is being investigated The work on the propagation of very low frequency radio waves continues Conferences Visits Lectures etc During the first term of the session 1960-61 Professor Randall was visiting Professor of Biophysics at Yale University In July 1961 he visited Stockholm to attend the first International Congress of Biophysics Professor Price lectured in Sydney Perth Calcutta and Oxford He gave the opening address at the Australian Spectroscopic Conference in Sydney in August 1961 Professor Domb Dr Μ Fisher Dr Sykes Mr Hiley and Dr Martin of the National Physical Laboratory who has been collaborating with the group presented papers at the Bristol Conference in January 1961 on Physics of Polymers Several members of the group attended the conference at Queen Mary College on Statistical Mechanics of Irreversible Processes Professor Domb took the Chair at an informal meeting on Lattice Dynamics and Anharmonicity held at Queen Mary College in May Mr Isenberg attended the summer school in Statistical Mechanics י at Breukelen Netherlands Professor Champion Mr Male and Dr Dean presented papers at the Diamond Conference organized by the Institute of Physics and the Physical Society at the University of Reading Dr Stokes attended the International Union of Crystallography conference in Cambridge in 1960 Dr Μ Fisher gave seminars at the Clarendon Laboratory Oxford at Hatfield Technical College and at the department of Physics Birmingham University Dr Wilkinson attended the Quantum Electronics conference in California and Spectroscopic conference in Israel He lectured to the Infra-red Discussion Group in London at the Physics department
