ANNUAL REPORT xxxix Geometry Seminar on Ring Topologies to seminars at the Univer- sities of Birmingham Liverpool and Manchester on cyclotomic fields and discriminants and to the International Colloquium on algebraic number theory in Oberwolfach on The module structure of Kummer extensions over Dedekind domain He also gave postgraduate course on The theory of algebraic number fields mainly attended by staff Dr Kilmister organized an Easter vacation course for school teachers on Trends in 20th century mathematics and himself con- tributed to it four lectures on Undecidable results in formal systems He also visited University College Ibadan as an examiner and gave lectures there on The axiomatic basis of Newtonian mechanics and on Godel's results for formal systems Dr Pirani gave lecture at Nordita Copenhagen on Basic ideas of gravitational radiation theory and he gave the Ritchie Lecture on the same topic at the Tait Institute of Mathematical Physics Edinburgh Dr Saffman lectured to seminars in Cambridge and London Mr Reeve lectured to the Topology Seminar at Cambridge University and gave an intercollegiate postgraduate lecture course in Algebraic Topology in the University of London He and Dr Tyrrell lectured to the London University Geometry Seminar This session the department has again to thank distinguished visitors for valuable assistance on an honorary basis notably Professor Schild of the University of Texas for giving an advanced lecture course on Relativity and Dr Sachs of the University of Syracuse for similar course on Quantum Mechanics The new research room in 35 Surrey Street has largely solved-at least for the present-the accommodation problem arising from the increasing number of research students and visitors Mention may be made also of the institution of an introductory course in Mathematics for biologists which was successfully conducted for class of some 35 by Dr Rosenblat DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY Number of Students lst 18 Ancillary Botany lst Year 2nd Year β Sc Special Part lst Year 2nd Year 10 δ Sc Special Part II Research Total 60
