ANNUAL REPORT XXV11 the Easter term he took part by invitation in week-end of discussions on the State of France held at Cumberland Lodge In August 1960 Dr Barron gave three lectures at the Institut d'Etudes Fran9aises de Touraine on anti-romantisme et le maniement du temps chez Flaubert et FromerUin The Cercle Frangais organized week-end of readings and discussions at St Catherine's Cumberland Lodge in the beginning of the Lent term which was attended by group of students and most of the French staff team from the Cercle Frangais was sent as usual to compete in the Inter-Collegiate Dramatic Competition and tied for second place with the team from Queen Mary College DEPARTMENT OF GERMAN Number of Students General and Subsidiary 21 Honours 70 Occasional Elementary 110 Postgraduate 14 Total 218 First Degrees Honours let Class 2nd Class Upper Division 2nd Class Lower Division 10 3rd Class Higher Degree with Distinction Beckley Some aspects of Brecht's dramatic technique in the light of his adaptations of English plays Departmental Notes Professor Norman lectured on mediaeval German literature at the Universities of Princeton Cornell and Toronto he also visited the Universities of Harvard and Columbia He visited the German Democratic Republic at the invitation of the German Academy in Berlin and the Saxon Academy in Leipzig and lectured on mediaeval German literary themes at the Universities of Jena Halle Leipzig Rostock and the Humboldt University Berlin He visited Darmstadt to take part in the spring meeting of the Deutsche Akademie fur Sprache und Dichtung of which he is corresponding member In June he lectured at the Universities of Bonn and Frankfurt
