ANNUAL REPORT XXV In March 1961 Professor Bullough visited the English departments at Makerere College and the Royal College Nairobi and on his way home called on colleagues at Cairo and gave lectures for the British Council in Cyprus and Athens Dr Sheard gave eight intercollegiate lectures at the Senate House on The Study of Dialectal English and talk on Shakespeare's English for the Overseas Service Dr Armstrong's promotion to Readership takes effect in October 1961 He acted as Adjudicator in the London University Intercollegiate Debating Competition On February 15th he delivered the Oration at the Annual Dinner of the Crabtree Foundation at University College London his subject being Crabtree and the Sage of Pittenweem He gave an illustrated lecture on The eighteenth- century theatre at Cumberland Lodge in July 1961 Mr Crow spent semester as Visiting Professor at Northwestern University Illinois and during that time was also Fellow of Newberry Library Chicago He lectured on Shakespeare at the Universities of Oregon Wisconsin and Toronto and at Tulane Washing- ton St Louis and Michigan State Universities He took part in Shakespeare seminars at Stratford Ontario and spoke at clubs and other gatherings Mr Yarker gave three lectures on The Restoration Drama to the London University Summer School in Literature Art and Music in Britain 1660 to 1740 six lectures on the Romantic poets in the Licence d'Anglais course at the French Institute and lecture to the Nottingham University English Society and the Nottingham branch of the English Association on Victorian Villains Mr Mutter gave course of 24 lectures on Chaucer to the Stuarts for the University of London Diploma in English at the City Literary Institute In July he lectured at Cumberland Lodge during Duke of Cumberland Week He was Lecturer and Tutor at the Scottish Universities' Summer School Edinburgh Mr Hill gave six lectures on Shakespearean Tragedy at the French Institute and lectured to the Northampton Arts Association on the criticism of Eliot Mr Ε Mottram lectured on Salinger and The Catcher in the Rye on Saul Bellow and Henderson the Rain King and on American sociology and the writer for the course entitled Modern American Literature at the Institute of Education In February 1961 he organized for the Buckinghamshire Education Committee week-end on American Literature and gave three lectures on writers from 1600 to 1851 In the Lent term he lectured on Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller in the course on Major Modern Dramatists organized by the Department of Extra-Mural Studies He lectured to student societies at King's College and Royal Holloway College on The New American Poetry Jazz and Poetry in America and "America To-day In July he read papers on Jazz 1900 to 1960 and Response to
