ANNUAL REPORT xxi 11 COLLEGE SOCIETIES AND ACTIVITIES Report from the Union Society This year the activities of the Union Society have attracted far more interest than usual whilst many societies have had record memberships This was largely due to the more personal welcome to freshers from the Union officers and to the replacement of the previously chaotic Freshers' Squash by more orderly introduction to the societies This was followed by series of dinners to which freshers and members of the teaching staff were invited Staff-student relationships at King's have been one of the particular concerns of the Union Society Executive Committee this session and comprehensive report was submitted and considered further innovation excellent in theory but in practice not very successful was that of digging zones whereby under- graduates were encouraged to form social groups according to the area of London in which they were residing and thereby help to break down the narrow basis of association by faculties Commemoration Week expanded almost to fortnight and was again success The Drama Society contributed an impressive performance of Blood Wedding by Lorca and the Debate was particularly stimulat- ing Amongst sporting activities the Table Tennis Club had an outstanding year winning the Cup Final and also the League Cup The Rugby Club lost to Imperial College in the final of the University Cup after fine game The Cricket Soccer Tennis and Athletics Clubs had good year on the whole The Badminton Club won the League Cup and the Netball Club won the inter-collegiate rally Moderate success was enjoyed by the Swimming and Judo Clubs but the Men's Hockey and Boats Club unfortunately had mediocre season The Laws Faculty won the Debates Cup after brilliant final against the Faculty of Theology The Drama Society did well in the University One-Act Play Festival The Music Society performed Handel's Saul in Southwark Cathedral with their customary vigour and in the Lent Term gave spirited pro- duction of The Yeomen of the Ghmrd At the Wellington Ball to which the President invited the Presidents of other Unions in return for past hospitality the theme was Victorian and many guests were in costume The Exodus Ball brought the social year to delightful conclusion During that evening the Principal presented his Cup to the Science Faculty for having contributed most to College life during the past year The Engineers proudly produced University College's mascot Phineas suitably daubed in King's colours at General Meeting but their cries of victory sounded little hollow when Reggie was spirited away few days later Successful negotiations ensued how- ever and the status quo was restored
