ANNUAL REPORT XV obtained Moreover in large number of studies the top places in the University lists were won by King's students most gratifying result which bears eloquent testimony both to the wise selection of students at entry and to the continued excellence of the teaching and supervision given in spite of the congested conditions prevailing in college It has been possible during the year to promote to Readerships or Professorships number of staff who have given distinguished service to the College in teaching and research and who by their published work have won recognition from their peers They are listed in In connection with the proposal to establish department of Bio- physics at King's College it was reported last year that with the generous financial aid of the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council building had been acquired in Drury Lane for conversion to laboratories for the new department They are to be known as the Wellcome Bio- physics Laboratories and Professor Randall Wheatstone Professor of Physics since 1946 has been appointed to the new Chair of Biophysics Both the College and the University look forward with confidence to great developments in this field under Professor Randall's leadership This appointment left the Wheatstone Chair of Physics vacant At the request of the College the University has appointed Professor Price second professor in the department to the Wheatstone Chair and the direction of the Wheatstone Laboratories in which for thirteen years he has done very distinguished work in the field of spectroscopy Lectureship in Military Studies later renamed War Studies was established in 1953 within the department of History The work in this field has developed and increased during the years and it was felt that the time had come to set it up as an independent department and to raise the status of the lecturer The College therefore asked the University to establish Readership in War Studies tenable at King's College and amid universal satisfaction the existing Lecturer Mr Μ Howard was appointed Reader and Head of the new department The policy of the University encouraged by the Faculty and Board of Studies in Theology has been to strengthen theological teaching and because of present circumstances to concentrate it at King's College The Samuel Davidson Chair of Old Testament Studies and the Chair of the History and Philosophy of Religion have already been transferred from the University to the College and two new Chairs established at the College one in Ecclesiastical History and the other in Divinity third was promised before the end of the quinquennium and it is pleasure to report that this has now been established the Reverend Professor Evans of the University of Durham will enter upon his duties as Professor of Historical Theology in October 1962 The only remaining professor on the Council side of the College Professor Tasker retired in September 1961 after thirty-five years of devoted and outstanding service there has been appointed to succeed him also in October 1962 the Reverend Dr Mascall Tutor at Christ Church Oxford These are notable accessions both to the Faculty of Theology
