ANNUAL REPORT vii Sir Hilary Jenkinson part-time lecturer in the History department 1919 Professor Hilda Johnstone Reader in History from 1914 to 1921 when she was appointed to the Chair of History at Royal Holloway College Dr Morgans Assistant Lecturer in Mathematics 1944-48 Professor Rose member of staff of the German department 1920- 35 and afterwards Head of the Modern Languages department at the London School of Economics The Very Reverend Norman Sykes Dean of Winchester who from 1924 to 1931 was Lecturer in the History department Former Students Sir Roland Turnbull former Governor of North Borneo Mr Burkewood Welbourn who graduated in Electrical Engineering in 1896 and was later student demonstrator FELLOWS The following were appointed Fellows of the College Miss Clarissa Courtney Bell who graduated from the College in 1922 with Second Class Honours in English From 1931 to 1945 Miss Bell was Lecturer in the Department of Education She joined the Ministry of Education in 1945 and is now Assistant Secretary in the Teachers Branch Dr Dolley Sc Ph Senior Lecturer in Chemistry since 1946 whose first appointment in College was as an Assistant Lecturer in 1923 Professor Ross Sc Ph Professor of Civil Engineering since 1946 and member of staff in the Faculty of Engineering since 1935 Miss Louise Willes Stone who was Reader in Romance Philo- logy from 1926 to 1955 and Head of the Department of French from 1950 to 1955 DISTINCTIONS AND APPOINTMENTS GAINED BY PAST AND PRESENT MEMBERS OF THE COLLEGE The Principal -Dr Noble was elected Vice-Chancellor of the University of London from September 1st 1961 The Registrar -Mr Combridge was elected President of the Mathematical Association for 1961-62 He was also appointed by the Minister of Education to the Standing Advisory Committee on Grants to Students Professor Bennet-Clark was appointed Advisor in Botany to the Carnegie Trust for three years
