iv ANNUAL REPORT gained the Military Cross He was appointed temporary part-time Assistant Lecturer in the department of French in 1919 and tutor for Economics students in 1920 During 1922-23 he was studying in France He returned to College as full-time Assistant Lecturer in 1923 He was promoted Lecturer in 1928 and Senior Lecturer in 1935 He was Sub-Dean of Arts when the war broke out in 1939 and went with the College to Bristol His steady devotion to his teaching and administrative duties there where he took his full share of obligations in fire watching with staff and students in the University buildings con- tributed largely to holding the Faculty of Arts together and this was recognized by his election to the Fellowship of King's College in 1944 year after the return of the College from Bristol Mr Jones is remembered with the highest affection and regard by many old students of the College especially those from the Faculty of Arts He did excellent work in visiting in several summer terms the universities in France at which first-year students of his department were studying for the term Mr Hugh Major Clarke was student of this College 1919-20 and was appointed Demonstrator in Electrical Engineering in September 1920 He was promoted Assistant Lecturer in 1922 Lecturer in 1924 and Senior Lecturer in 1937 At the end of 1944 he resigned on receiving permanent appointment under the Army Education Scheme but returned to his old post in 1946 Mr Clarke for many years between the two wars held commission in the University of London and gained the Territorial Decoration On the outbreak of war in 1939 he became major in the Second Survey Regiment of the Royal Artillery in the autumn of 1942 he was ap- pointed Lieutenant-Colonel in charge of radio location school Mr Clarke has gained the affection and respect of many generations of Engineering students He has been one of the two auditors of the Engineering branch of the King's College London Association for many years Resignations Faculty of Arts -Mr Smart Lecturer in the History and Philosophy of Religion Miss Kemlin Ching Assistant Lecturer in Spanish Mrs Marianne Wain Assistant Lecturer in German resigned December 31st 1960 Mrs Brenda Redmayne Assistant Lecturer in Classics Mr Ν Η Osmond Assistant Lecturer in French Mr Shaw Assistant Lecturer in English Messieurs Davigo and Dupont Assistants in French Miss Evamaria Czerwonka Assistant in German Faculties of Arts and Natural Science -Mr Hewson-Browne and Mr Meek Assistant Lecturers in Mathematics Mr Le Maitre Assistant Lecturer in Geology resigned March 31st 1961
