152 FACULTY OP NATURAL SCIENCE Third Session A10-Lectures Nuclear Physics hrs Au-Lectures Wave Mechanics Statistical Mechanics and proper- ties of Atoms Molecules and Solids including their spectra hrs A12-Lectures Modern Theory of Electricity hrs A13-Lectures Nature and Properties of Large Molecules hrs The course for the Sc Special degree in Physics extends over three years The final examination in Physics is taken in two parts first and second year examinations in ancillary Mathematics must also be taken The Wheatstone Physics Laboratory The Wheatstone Laboratory in the College and the Halley Stewart Laboratory at Hampstead are open to students for practical study and research Instruction is given in the Laboratory in the accurate measurement of physical quantities of all kinds and in the experimental verification and illustration of the principles of Physics Research The Research Laboratories are open to properly qualified persons for purposes of research under the general direction of the Head of the Department Research work for higher degrees may be undertaken At the present time five main types of research problem are open for study Nuclear physics research in conjunction with Harwell δ Fundamental spectroscopy of gases liquids and solids Tech- niques cover the range from the extreme ultra-violet to the far infra-red and include electron spin resonance Investigations into the structure of matter using nuclear radia- tions and high speed particles The design and use of solid conduction and scintillation counters Radio investigation of the atmosphere Theoretical research is in progress in Statistical Mechanics and in Solid State Physics CHEMICAL ENGINEERING Reader and Director of Studies Sidney Bevan Watkins Sc Chem This course which falls within the purview of the Faculty of Engineering is designed so that it may be taken in the year following the Final Sc Examination by students who have devoted their under- graduate course primarily either to Chemistry or to Engineering The course leads to the College Diploma in Chemical Engineering Par- ticulars are given elsewhere in the Calendar and in separate leaflet
