119 UNIVERSITY OF LONDON KING'S COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION One-Year Training Course The course in professional training which extends over one session three terms is open to all men and women graduates of recognised Universities who are accepted by the Head of the Department No admission to the course can be granted without previous personal interview The work prepares for the examination for the Postgraduate Certificate in Education of the University of London and is intended primarily for those who wish to teach in Secondary Schools The ex- amination is normally held at the end of June or early in July each year All students must attend courses on the Principles of Education the English Educational System Educational Psychology Health Edu- cation Teaching Method and one of the following -History of Education Comparative Education Further Educational Psychology Classes in Speech Training and in the methods of teaching special sub- jects are also provided Opportunities are afforded for visits of in- spection to special types of Schools and facilities for study in other institutions of the University An important part in the session's activities is given to teaching in practice schools-at least 60 days Students are expected to carry out preliminary practice for three weeks in primary schools before the session begins It is desirable that candidates reading Comparative Education should make contact with educational institutions in at least one other country Special courses overseas are arranged during the Easter vacation and students taking this option are normally required to enrol for them The fee for the course is £75 This comprises all registration and tuition fees and the entry fee for the first attempt at the examination The Department is able each year to award number of Ministry of Education grants for men or women tenable for the one year of professional training the holders of which are known by the Ministry of Education as Recognised Students These students may be exempt from the payment of tuition fees and may receive in addition main- tenance grant which is approximately equivalent in value to State Scholarship The value is similarly subject to deduction of student's contribution calculated upon the net family income after making certain allowances but at present minimum grant of £50 year is pay- able The rates of grant for the coming session have not been announced by the Ministry at the time of going to press Dependants' grants are available for certain mature students Applications for entry to the course can be made by graduates or by students in the last year of their degree course on special form which must be sent in as early as possible in the Michaelmas term and in any case not later than December 15th before the autumn in which
