100 FACULTY OF ARTS iii Subsidiary Courses pass at level will be sufficient unless the subject is French Latin or Mathematics in these subjects an "A" level pass will be required An applicant may be admitted to read Geology Portuguese or History of Philosophy as subsidiary subject without having studied it previously iv General Degree Courses Passes in at least two subjects at "A" level will be required An applicant wishing to take French German Latin Mathematics or Theology as subject for General degree course will be expected to have pass at level in that subject For English Geography Greek History or Spanish an Ο" level pass will be sufficient Students with no prior knowledge of Spanish may combine the General course with the elementary course the combined course taking three years Applicants may be admitted to read other subjects for the General degree taken from the list below without having studied them previously but they are not recommended to select more than one subject under these conditions Degree Courses Students in their first year will be encouraged to attend lectures in at least one subject other than those which form an integral part of their degree course For the General Degree Examination three subjects have to be taken which may be selected from the following Greek Old Norse History of Philosophy Latin Portuguese Mathematics English Spanish Theology French Geography War Studies German History Three papers are set in each subject and the pass list is published in three divisions The second division will be divided into an upper and lower section Honours are not awarded The course is one of three years' duration The Honours Degree may be taken in any one of the follow- ing branches but except in the oases of Classics English History Mathe- matics and Philosophy the candidate will be required to take sub- sidiary subject also The honours course extends over three years Classics English History Latin with subsidiary Greek French Philosophy Greek with subsidiary Latin Geography Portuguese Mathematics Pure and Applied German Spanish Applicants for French or German may be required to take short test set by these departments For applicants still at school the Greek may not be selected without Latin
