PRIZES---NATURAL SCIENCE 91 The Medal is open to all regular students who have studied for at least three years in the Department of Chemistry The Medal will be awarded annually to the student who in the opinion of the Principal and the Professors of Chemistry shall have most distinguished himself in the final year of the Special Honours Course in the Department of Chemistry SAMUEL SMILES PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY This prize was founded in 1938 from funds contributed by his former colleagues and former pupils as testimonial to Professor Samuel Smiles Sc upon his retirement from the Daniell Chair of Chemistry which he had held since 1920 The Prize consists of books to the value of £6 The Prize will be awarded at the end of each session to the student in the second year of the Sc Special Chemistry course who in the opinion of the Daniell Professor of Chemistry is adjudged to be the most meritorious ALAN FLOWER MEMORIAL PRIZE The Prize was founded in 1945 in memory of Alan Frederick Flower student in the Faculty of Natural Science from 1938 to 1940 who was killed on active service on 30th November 1942 while serving as Sergeant-Observer in the Royal Air Force The donor of this endow- ment was former student of the College The Prize consists of books or instruments to the value of about £3 The Prize will be awarded at the end of each session to the student who shall have most distinguished himself in the Final Year of the course for the General Degree of Sc provided that the candidate has studied Pure Mathematics or Physics as part of his course PHYSICS ESSAY PRIZE This prize was founded in 1945 by the gift of £50 by an anonymous donor The Prize consists of books to the value of £10 The Prize is open to all regular undergraduate students in the Department of Physics The Prize is awarded annually to the student who in the opinion of the Professors of Physics submits the best essay on some subject within the range of Atomic and Nuclear Physics the subject to be selected annually by the Professor Candidates must send their essays to the Secretary not later than May 31st The subject for 1962 may be any one of the following Space physics Modern conceptions of the liquid state Fundamental particles The solid state
