SCHOLARSHIPS-NATURAL SCIENCE 67 LAYTON SCIENCE RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP Founded under the will of Charles Edward Layton former Associate and Member of the Council who left sum of money to be devoted to Studentship or Studentships in order to assist such students as may in the opinion of the Principal after consultation with the Pro- fessorial Staff give the best promise of aptitude and genius for original scientific work Studentship of £450 year with free tuition will be offered annually payable in equal instalments at the beginning of each term Any student of the College is eligible for Studentship who has attended for at least six terms regular course for first degree or for corresponding academic qualification of the College The Principal shall request the Head of each Department in the Faculties of Natural Science Medical Science and Engineering to report on any student in his Department whom he may desire to recommend for the Studentship The Head of the Department shall furnish and report on the career and qualifications of the candidate recommended and the kind of research proposed After receiving these reports the Principal shall recommend to the Delegacy candidate for appointment or shall state that in his opinion there is no candidate of sufficient merit The usual appointment will be for one year At the end of the year the Delegacy shall require report on the progress of the Student from his Supervisor through the Head of his Department and if the Student does not obtain an alternative comparable award they may renew the Studentship for one or two further years Every Layton Student will be required to carry on research work under the advice and direction of the Head of his Department either in the College Laboratories or elsewhere He must not without the consent of the Delegacy undertake any other work but he may be called upon to do such teaching in the College as is not incom- patible with his research work The Delegacy may out of any surplus income of the Fund make grants towards the expenses for travelling and research DANIELL SCHOLARSHIP This Scholarship was founded in 1864 in honour of John Frederick Daniell Professor of Chemistry in King's College from 1831 to 1845 Its object is to encourage the prosecution of original research in Chemistry This Scholarship is of the value of £40 is tenable for one year in the College and is open to every regular student of the College It will be awarded at the end of each Session on the recommendation of the Daniell Professor of Chemistry The Scholar must undertake to work for higher degree
