48 GENERAL INFORMATION THE COLLEGE LIBRARY The College Library contains upwards of 200 000 volumes covering all subjects taught in the College including specialised libraries in certain subjects for the teaching of which King's College has special respon- sibility within the University Imperial History Military Studies Modern Greek Portuguese Spanish and Theology In the General Library are to be found bibliographies and other works of reference general periodicals general works in Science and the working collections in modern English and American literature History Italian Philosophy modern Spanish literature and Theology Owing to lack of space in the main building the working collections in other subjects are shelved in separate libraries housed as rule in the corre- sponding teaching departments Special collections which have been presented or bequeathed to the College Library include that formed by Dr William Marsden onetime Secretary to the Navy which contains many rare items in many languages the library of Professor Sir Charles Wheatstone comprising some 000 volumes on electricity and kindred subjects the libraries of Dr Furnivall Professor Skeat and Professor Reed now incorporated in the English library collection of works on modern Greek studies left to the College by former Principal Dr Burrows collection of material mainly relating to Goethe and Schiller made by Mrs Frida Mond comprehensive collection of works in the German language on literature history science and Judaica formed by Dr Ludwig Kantorowicz the libraries of Mr James in mathe- matics and of the Rev Stebbing in zoology and the theologi- cal collections of the Rev Professors Box and Η Relton The College has also acquired the Portuguese library of Professor Prestage the historical books of Professor Hearnshaw the books on French literature of Professor Louis Brandin and the classical and patristic collection of Professor Alexander Souter to- gether with his papers An author catalogue of the entire Library is provided in the General Library and this is supplemented by subject catalogue containing entries in classified order for works contained in the working collections In addition each subject library has its own author and subject cata- logues relating to the books shelved there All present members of the College are entitled to use the Library and other persons may do so under the conditions set out in the Library Rules As general rule access to the shelves in the outlying subject libraries is restricted to members of the departments concerned but any person enjoying the privilege of using the Library may request work from such library to be brought to the General Library for his use The General Library is open in term from 30 until 45 on Mondays to Thursdays until 15 on Fridays and until 12 45 on Saturdays it is open in vacation from 10 to 30 on Mondays to Fridays and until 12 noon on Saturdays except during the long vacation when the Library is closed on Saturdays The hours of opening of outlying subject libraries vary and as rule they are closed to readers in vacation The Library as whole is closed on public holidays and at such other times as the College buildings are closed For The University Library see page 58
