ANNUAL REPORT xiv contraction and the fine structure of muscle and structure composition and morphogenesis of cilia and flagella particularly in protozoa In the spectroscopy group under the direction of Professor Price the use of wide range of spectroscopic methods for the study of molecular structure and the problems of the solid state continues and much new equipment was acquired or built for the purpose The investigations varied from the study of impurity centres in crystalline quartz to the effect of fluorine substitution on the ionization potentials of molecular chromophores An extensive list of frequency standards was prepared covering the range 3-3100 cm-1 for the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry largely from measurements made in this laboratory which will provide the most accurate reference frequencies for many years Techniques for measurements on liquids and solids in the vacuum ultra-violet were developed and equipment for high-pressure and high-temperature studies on solids over wide ranges was built The nuclear physics group under the direction of Dr Burge made their first experiments on the new proton linear accelerator at the National Institute for Research in Nuclear Science Harwell The remote control collimation system works well and apparatus for study- ing scattering and reaction cross-sections was tested free-jet liquid hydrogen target is being built and apparatus for liquid argon xenon and krypton studies is now completed Theoretical work on the optical model is being carried out in collaboration with the Clarendon Labora- tory Oxford using the London University Mercury computer The atmospherics research group led by Dr Chapman con- tinued its work on the polarization of the very-low-frequency VLF components of the electromagnetic waves radiated by distant lightning discharges and on the propagation of VLF radio waves The group is receiving regularly from the information on artificial earth satellites in order that observations may be made on the radio signals from satellites to provide information on ionospheric conditions relating to the propagation of atmospherics The new magnetic tape recorder referred to in the previous report has been completed It was found that considerable energy at extremely low frequencies below kc is radiated from lightning discharges to great distances and the new apparatus has considerable potential value in determining the source and propagation characteristics of this relatively unexplored region of the radio spectrum In the information systems group led by Dr MacKay the new magnetic system for averaging the electrical responses of the brain to repeated stimuli proved satisfactory in an experimental form Conferences and Lectures etc Professor Randall visited the Institute of Physics of the University of Genoa in March to discuss biophysical research there Professor Price presented paper at the Liege Spectroscopy Con- ference and gave lectures at Harwell University College Swansea and
