ANNUAL REPORT XXXV Higher Degrees I'h Barnes Individual local and national bargaining for teachers' salaries study of the period 1858-1944 Ph The Revd Thomas John Scott Lidgett 1854-1953 and the Education of the People Rolls Present trends in part-time day release schemes in further education Departmental Notes That part of the student body which is engaged in professional train- ing continued to grow in numbers and the department has now almost reached the limit of what can be accommodated in present quarters Each year larger numbers of applicants have to be refused admission and the work of interviewing and selection is now the heaviest part of the administrative burden on the staff The additional claims upon the lecturing staff were largely met by the appointment of part-time teachers In this capacity the department welcomed Mr Wallis who for some years has helped the College with the supervision of practical work Miss Mildred Cant and Miss Phyllis Wilshere Full-time members of the staff continued with such outside lecturing as time-tables allowed particularly as members of the London Area Training Organization The approach of the three-year course in training colleges has led to great deal of committee work and of inter- change of views The staff is now represented on the governing bodies of Goldsmiths' College Stoekwell College Whitelands College the Froebel Educational Institute Coloma College Chelsea College of Physical Education Battersea Training College Cavendish Square Training College Digby Stuart College and Maria Assumpta Training College It has members also on the Education Committee of the Girls' Public Day School Trust and on the governing bodies of numerous schools Professor Α Judges was re-elected Chairman of the Conference of Heads of University Departments of Education he delivered the Joseph Payne lectures for 1959 at the College of Preceptors and was visiting lecturer at Cambridge and Durham Universities and Jordanhill Training College Glasgow Mrs Blackwell undertook new work for the National Foundation for Educational Research in promoting an inquiry into work in progress in education and educational psychology in British universities which will in due course be made available in all centres of research Dr King was invited in October 1959 to New York to address the College Entrance Board He lectured for the Youth Employment Service in leader-training course and took part in summer vacation course on Education in England at the Institute of Education He
