ANNUAL REPORT xxi Shell-Mex and Ltd gave the Faculty of Engineering 16-mm sound film An introduction to modern gears The Tobacco Manufacturers' Standing Committee offered grant of f1 050 to the department of Anatomy towards the salary of research worker Miss Hosking The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority offered sum not exceeding £3 600 for the period February 1960 to September 1963 towards the investigation of carbon transfer in sodium systems under- taken in the department of Mechanical Engineering The European Office of the Air Research and Development Com- mand United States Air Force offered grant to Professor Bondi for three years from November lst 1960 in the sum of $32 000 to aid his research in relativity physics The United States Army renewed for one year in the sum of £2 258 their grant to the department of Physics The War Office renewed for one year their grant of £1 800 in aid of studies in the chemistry of organo-phosphorous compounds The Wellcome Trust gave £120 000 towards the cost of the purchase of the lease of 26 29 Drury Lane to accommodate the department of Biophysics The Trust offered grant of £500 to the department of Zoology to enable Mr Ghosh to continue his research for further six months from March 1961 12 COLLEGE SOCIETIES AND ACTIVITIES Re port from the Union Society The year has been very successful and happy one for the Union Society Relationships with other colleges remained cordial in spite of the fact that Reggie was taken by Queen Mary College on the eve of the Foundation Games He was retrieved however and repainted by the Engineers in time for the Games The generous hospitality of other Unions was returned at the Welling- ton Ball held at the end of the Lent Term when the new Union Officers took over The event which has stolen the limelight over the past year has been the Lion Club Appeal for the building of new Club premises The college was led in vigorous campaign towards the target of £10 000 by the Lion Club Agent Various functions organized by the Faculties the President's Appeal appeals to and and finally the proceeds of the Gala Performance of The Most Happy Fella at the Coliseum achieved the sum of £7 000 Throughout the Lion Club's normal activities continued smoothly The religious societies have as usual been active with World Refugee Year taking up great deal of their energies Money was collected from starvation lunches sale of lost property and carol singing The year has been fairly successful one for the sports teams The
